Panhandle Trout Unlimited is Protecting Idaho's Future

The Panhandle Chapter of Trout Unlimited works to ensure that robust populations of native and wild coldwater fish thrive within their North Idaho range, so that our children’s grandchildren can enjoy healthy fisheries in their home waters.

We serve the Kootenai, Clark Fork-Pend Oreille, and Coeur d’Alene-Spokane River systems, engaging in education, restoration and conservation activities to support healthy aquatic habitats.

Native Kootenai Watershed Species: Westslope cutthroat trout, redband trout, bull trout, burbot, white sturgeon.
Native Pend Oreille Watershed Species: bull trout, Westslope cutthroat trout, whitefish.
Spokane River Watershed Species: bull trout, Westslope cutthroat, whitefish.

Welcome to North Idaho’s Waterways and Fish

North Idaho hosts three major tributaries to the Columbia River system:

  • The Spokane-Coeur d’Alene which includes the St. Joe, St. Maries, Coeur d’Alene Rivers and Coeur d’Alene Lake.
  • The Pend Oreille which includes the tail end of the Clark Fork River, Lake Pend Oreille, Priest Lake, Priest River and the Pend Oreille River.
  • The Kootenai River which flows through the top NE corner of Idaho.

Each one of these systems has a different assortment of native and non-native fish species. Use the map to see what native species are in each watershed.

Tis the season for this fly!

Ausable Wulff Fly

Tied by Bill Love, Pattern by Fran Betters

Although this pattern was created for the Ausable River in upstate New York, it appeals to local Westslope cutthroat trout in the fall when its orange body and bushy hackles likely resemble an October caddis.

Our chapter makes a difference.

When you become a TU Member, when you plant trees on an eroded river bank, when you spur your local representatives to protect the resource, when you teach a veteran to fly fish – you make fishing better, for your community, and future generations.
